The Wick Go Marching On

Newcastle East End arrived at St James' Park without a win this season, so on paper it looked to be an easy home win on the cards, but over the 90 minutes it was anything but.
It was a scrappy start for the home side against the visitors, who should have taken the lead in the 2nd minute. A cross was allowed to come through into the 6 yard box, but somehow Max Bell managed to hit the post from only a couple of yards out, only to see the ball go into keeper Brooks' arms. A real let off for the home side.
McClelland was getting chances at the other end, and his luck in front of goal seemed to be out as efforts went wide and over the bar.
His efforts weren't in vain though, as he can also supply the chances for others. It would be his through ball to Cunningham in the 16th minute that would break the deadlock. Cunningham with the simplest of finishes around the keeper to finally break down the away defence (1-0).
The home side were pressing, and 2 goals in 2 minutes would all but seal the cup tie. McClelland would finally get his rewards in the 25th minute from close range after beating 3 defenders.
Jonathyn Quinn would strike a goal of the season contender (if he meant it) from distance, looping over the keeper into the far corner. A cracking effort and 3-0 to the home side at half time.
2nd half and further chances for McClelland, with his 2nd goals eventually coming in the 58th minute, a well hit volley from debutant Eastlake's cross (4-0).
Both sides would create further chances, Alnwick going closest from Quinn in the dying moments.
Best wishes to the ref who went off injured with a few minutes remaining, hopefully nothing to serious as we all know they are in short supply at times at grassroots level.
