|
HEDDON 1 ALNWICK 2 Alnwick were away to basement club Heddon whose form has picked up of late having recently put out Walker in the cup and improvement of form in the league without gaining points, being beaten by the odd goal against the leading teams. The pitch at Bullocksteads was in perfect condition when many games had to be cancelled due to the recent weather conditions. It was Alnwick who should have went in font after 10 mins good work by midfielder Tony Brown on the left cutting the ball back for Mark Cockburn who hit a first time shot from 8 yards out which struck the post the ball came straight back to Cockburn for a second chance but the midfielder put it over the bar to the disbelief of himself ad his team mates. Alnwick went in front on 25 mins a Brown corner deep in to the six yard area was headed home by the smallest player on the pitch Kevin Elliot who got in between the two Heddon defenders to get his first goal for the club.Alnwick had the best move of the game on 35 mins after a series of passes starting in defence fullback Danny Lowes delivered a great cross to the back post for Ben Keenan but the striker headed the ball just over the cross bar. On 40 mins Alnwick were awarded a free kick wide on the left Browns cross in to the area sailed over the keeper and in to the top corner for his fifth goal of the season. Heddon got an early goal at the start of the second half a corner was met near post and a powerful header flew in to the top corner of the net. The home side had there best spell after the goal and were unlucky not to equalise as a shot crashed off the post with Brookes beaten the ball going back across the face of goal and cleared away to safety. The game was end to end at this point Keenan had a header which hit the post and came back in to the keepers arms. Brooks was called in to action and made his first real save on 70 mins blocking a Heddon player shot with his legs as he broke clear of the Alnwick defence. Dale Kennedy then had two great efforts both just going over the bar from 20 yards out, Scott McMullen was next to try his luck from the edge of the box his shot just going wide of the post. A good team performance by Alnwick got them the three point’s o the day but credit to Heddon who are a much better team than there lowly position suggests.
