Alnwick v Newcastle University

ALNWICK TOWN 4  NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY 1

Newcastle University had their usual late start to the season playing only their second match of the season so far.

It was the youngsters who started the better and Brian Brooks was called upon early in the game to make a good save in a one on one situation as the Newcastle side broke clear of the Alnwick defence.

Alnwick's Gary Patterson was unlucky on 20 mins seeing his goal bound effort from 8 yards hitting Tom Vickers as it was on its way into the back of the net.

Alnwick had a chance midway through the half, Tom Vickers hitting the post from a header with the keeper well beaten.

On 35 mins Alnwick took the lead, a great cross from Scott McMullen found Vickers who this time glanced his header into the corner of the net to give Alnwick an interval lead.

Alnwick got off to a much better start in the second half and on 55 mins midfielder Tony Browns superbly placed shot from 25 yards into the top corner giving the visiting keeper no chance. Alnwick welcomed back Ben Keenan for his first game of the season coming on as substitute and last seasons leading marksman soon got his first of the campaign heading home a James Jeffries cross from six yards.

Alnwick were dominant at this point and had some good chances that narrowly went wide of the target.

Credit to the Newcastle side, they never stopped working and were rewarded as they broke down the wing and a cross was finished  from six yards on 70 mins.

Alnwick got their fourth on 80 mins, McMullen delivering a good pass for Dale Kennedy to out pace his marker, the youngster still had a lot to do but the striker cut inside the defender and placed his shot under the advancing keeper.

On 85 mins Uni went down to ten men having a player sent off for retaliation kicking out at Keenan after a tackle.

A good three points for Alnwick against a team who will only improve as they get more games under their belt.

Alnwick will soon be matched against the Uni again as the face them in a preliminary cup match at St.James on Saturday.
