Alnwick Town v Carlisle City

The curtain finally came down on Alnwick Towns long season with a home game against Cumbrian outfit Carlisle City.

Alnwick gave young midfielder David Davison his full home debut for the club in a five man midfield with an average age of only twenty.

It was the youngster’s dominance in midfield that was the catalyst for the win as they outplayed and fought there Cumbrian rivals who in the end resorted to a long ball game with little success.

Carlisle had there only real chance of the first half on 12 mins after a goal mouth scramble from a corner was eventually hacked clear by the Alnwick defenders.

Alnwick were playing some great football and deservedly went in front on 25 mins James Lang who was playing in centre defence for the game delivered a deep free kick in to the penalty area the Carlisle keeper came off his lines to punch the ball away but was left stranded as Dale Kennedy headed home from six yards out.

Senior Benevolant Bowl Final:Alnwick Town v Heaton Stannington

NORTHUMBERLAND FA SENIOR BENEVOLANT BOWL FINAL

 

Alnwick Town 2 Heaton Stannington 1  (AET)

 Northumberland FA head quarters Blue Flame ground was the venue of this years bowl  final it was back in the reigns of Mike Dagless in 1987 that Alnwick last had there hands on this prestige’s trophy.

 

Heaton Stannington are a well established club being formed in 1910 and were looking to add some silver ware in there centenary season.

Both clubs play in black and white stripes and rules enforced a change of strips for both teams Alnwick playing in blue and Heaton in all red.

Alnwick have tried to rest players in recent weeks specifically for this game as the hectic end of season fixtures have taken its toll on clubs.

The game was evenly fought in the opening stages as both sides tried to gain the upper hand and it was Alnwick who were frustrating Heaton as they broke up play in midfield and were dominant at the back with Gary Patterson winning every ball in the air that came his way.

Alnwick created a couple of chances as crosses reined in to the Heaton penalty area Ben Keenan just heading over on both occasions.

 Young striker Dale Kennedy was a constant thorn in the side of Heaton as he closed down defenders time after time as he worked tirelessly for the team. Alnwick went in front on 38 mins a Scott McMullen free kick curled in between defenders was met by midfielder Tony Brown who lost his marker and headed over the stranded keeper and in to the top corner of the net for his 15th goal of the season.

Shankhouse v Alnwick Town

Well if you  five minutes late for this game you would have missed two early goals for the home side as Alnwick were shell shocked in conceding the first on 1 min 30 seconds as Alnwick had there usual slow start and were punished, the first through slack marking and failing to clear there lines.

The second goal came on 3 mins a long throw in to the box was flicked on and duly smashed home from six yards out.

 Alnwick could have collapsed after the early set back but there attitude was  fantastic as they clawed there way back in to the game and Kevin Elliot was the first to test the home keeper with a 25 yard effort which was tipped over the baron 12 mins.

Newcastle University v Alnwick Town

NEWCATLE UNIVERSITY 4 ALNWICK TOWN 3

 

Alnwick were away to the lowly students with the bare number of players for the mid week clash. Both teams started at a high tempo Mark Cockburn having a 20 yard shot in to the top corner well saved.

Keenan then had two good chances with his head it just missed the target.

The students went ahead on 20 mins a shot was save by Brian Brooks but the rebound fell kindly to a Newcastle striker who calmly tucked the ball in to the net.

Alnwick were awarded a penalty on the half hour as Keenan was brought down the forward stepped up and scored his 15th of the season.

The Students got back in front just before the break as some good football was rewarded with a well taken goal at the back post.

The game was end to end in the second period and Alnwick levelled the game on 60 mins a free kick was awarded on the edge of the area for the keeper handling the ball out of the penalty area Chris Moffett stepped up and bent the ball in to the top corner giving the keeper no chance.

Alnwick were denied taking the lead on 65 mins a corner fell to Cockburn at the back post 6 yards out but his powerful strike was saved by the keeper at point blank range.

The students were not finished yet and scored the goal of the game there left winger who was a constant threat all evening cut in and hit a strike from 25 yards out that flew in the top corner of the net

Newcastle were harshly awarded a penalty on 80 mins Bryan Murray falling on the ball after being clearly fouled, but the incident was not seen and the students extended there lead. Alnwick pulled a goal back on 85 mins Danny Lowes chasing the keeper down as a ball was laid back to him, the keeper making a rare mistake as the ball bounced off his leg for Lowes to side foot in to the net.

Alnwick had yet another chance to score on 90 mins Keenan breaking free of the defence but the forward was thwarted as his shot was saved by the keeper on the edge of the penalty area as he came out to close the angle down.

Newcastle will be wondering on displays like that how they are it the wrong end of the league as the youngsters had some quality players on show.

Alnwick can take credit on the night with the bare numbers of players playing through the game with injuries that they gave a good account of themselves.

 Alnwick were visiting the Sheepmount ground for the second time this year and the Alnwick players were left scratching there heads after the final whistle was blown.

In a game were Alnwick played some lovely football and were the far better team on the day, however it is all about the ball going in the back of the net and Carlisle managed to take what few chances they created

 

Alnwick pressed Carlisle from the start and had the bulk of play and possession, Kevin Elliot had a shot dip over the bar from 20 yards out, then Chris Moffett free kick narrowly went past the post.
