The History of Alnwick Town Football Club  

 

1879: Formed as Alnwick United Services. Only 'association football' side between Newcastle and Dunbar.

1898/99: Win North Northumberland League.

1900: Move to St James's Park under new name Alnwick United Juniors. Between then and World War One team changes name from United, to Town and back to United.

1923: Enter into East Northumberland League.

1935: Enter into Northern Alliance.

1936: Become Alnwick Town.

1937/38: Win Northern Alliance.

1960 - 1972: Glory days for Alnwick Town. Club wins 20 trophies in 12 years, including 8 Northern Alliance titles and 5 League Cups.

1961/62: Northumberland Senior Cup: Runners-Up

1964/65: Win Durham Central League Cup. Alliance didn't operate that season.

1971/72: Northumberland Amatuer Cup winners.

1980/81: Northern Alliance Subsidiary Cup winners.

1982: Enter into newly formed Northern League Second Division. Leave Northern Alliance having won the Championship a total of 9 times and the League Cup 5 times.

1986-87: Northumberland Benevolent Bowl winners.

1987/88: Floodlights switched on. Play Newcastle Utd.

1988/89: Northern League 2 runners-up. Promoted, on goal difference, to Northern League 1. Have the League's first female chairman, Judith Draycott.

1990/91: Relegated from Northern League 1.

1995/1996: Craven Cup. Runners-Up

1999/00: Craven Cup. Runners-Up

2000: Entertain Newcastle Utd at St James's Park.

2006/07: Finish bottom of Northern League 2.

2007: Resign and are relegated from Northern League for failing to meet ground criteria.
2007: Entertain Newcastle United Reserves in the first round of the NFA Senior Cup.

2008: A new shadow committee is put into place and set to take over at the end of the 07/08 season. Tom McKie is elected as the club's new chairman and John Hope and Gordon Webster become vice-chairman. The news stops Alnwick Town from folding.

2008/09: Alnwick Town win pinpoint recruitment  Cup Final 2-0 against  Newcastle East End

2008/09: Alnwick Town Reserves become double winners: NNL League Division 2 Champions & also winners the Runciman Cup

2009: Alnwick Town F.C. are awarded  F.A. Charter Standard Club status for the 1st time in its history

2009/10: Alnwick Town win the Senior Benevolent Bowl Final 2-1 (aet)  against Heaton Stannington

2009/10: Alnwick Town Reserves become double cup final winners: The Sanderson Cup,  Then follow that by winning The Bilclough Cup.

 

Town's Famous sons:
Burnley's 1960s full-back John Angus, who won England honours.Goalkeeper Chris Guthrie, released after one reserve game and later sold by Weymouth to Tottenham Hotspur for £100,000.
