PETERLEE 1 ALNWICK TOWN 1
Alnwick were at lowly Peterlee who have had a decent run of form of late having recently come under new management bringing in a youthful squad of players to the club.
Peterlee have one of the best set ups in the Premier League of the Alliance and a pitch to match any in the Northern league.
Alnwick got off to a great start and on 15 mins Scott McMullen beat his man on the right, got to the by line and delivered a great cross to Alnwicks leading goal scorer Ben Keenan to powerfully head home.
The goal should have spurred Alnwick on but it was the young Peterlee side that began to play the better football and would have drawn level had Alnwick midfielder Tony Brown not cleared off his goal line with his head.
Gary Patterson then headed over the Peterlee bar from a Brown corner.
Keenan then finished a mazy run with a powerful shot from 20 yards that was tipped over the bar by the Peterlee keeper.
On 35 mins Peterlee were awarded a penalty Alnwick defender Brian Murray’s reckless challenge taking the legs away from the Peterlee forward, up stepped Jonathan Monaghan to slot the ball wide of Alnwick keeper Brooks and level the game.
Alnwick in the second half were the better of the two teams Marc Richardson twice being denied by the Peterlee keeper who turned both efforts around the post from 18 yards.
Gary Patterson then headed just over from six yards from a McMullen corner.
To be fair to Peterlee they also had a couple of good attempts in the second period but failed to hit the target on both occasions.
Alnwick were dangerous and pressed to the end but could not finish Peterlee off but credit must be given to his young Peterlee side that had some fine individual performances on the day and played far better than their league position suggests.
